Cultivating a unique culture for a retail start-up

A startup in the home decor industry established in 2023, embarked on a mission to differentiate itself through a targeted company culture. Despite the founding team's long-standing familiarity and trust, the company aimed to redefine their working dynamics to foster a unique cultural reference within the new organisation. That is when the company reached out to Scale-Up Partners, with the request to build a solid foundation for its objectives.

Together with the leadership and HR team, we implemented a multi-faceted strategy focused on culture and people:

  • Creation of Cultural Values: The company meticulously drafted a document outlining its core cultural values. This blueprint highlighted behaviours that embodied these values, serving as a guide for all employees.

  • Behavioural Framework: Alongside the positive behaviours, we identified a list of non-desired behaviours to help employees steer clear of actions that could undermine the company culture.

  • Competency-Based Interviews: Building on the defined values and behaviours, the company developed a series of competency-based interview questions. This approach ensured that new hires were not only skilled but also aligned with the company’s cultural expectations.

  • OKR based Performance Management: We created a solid foundation for managing goals on a regular basis for the ambitious roadmap of the retail company by using OKR methodology.
